After Crown or Bridge Placement (Including Temporaries)
Crowns and bridges are designed to restore the function, health, and appearance of your smile. To ensure a smooth recovery and long-term success, please follow these guidelines:
1. Numbness and Sensitivity
• Numbness from local anesthesia may last two to four hours
• Avoid chewing or drinking hot beverages until numbness completely wears off to prevent injury
• Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is common and may last for several days or even weeks, especially if the tooth was deeply prepared
2. Temporary Crown or Bridge Care
• Avoid sticky or hard foods such as chewing gum, caramel, ice, or nuts
• If the temporary becomes loose or falls off, contact us right away. Do not try to reattach it yourself
• Brush gently around the temporary. When flossing, slide the floss out from the side rather than pulling it upward, which could dislodge the crown
3. Permanent Crown or Bridge
• After the permanent restoration is placed, you can resume eating normally once numbness is gone
• You may feel slight pressure or mild bite imbalance. If your bite feels “off” or uneven, please call us to adjust it
• It can take a few days to fully adjust to the new crown or bridge, especially with multiple units
4. Pain and Discomfort
• Some gum or jaw soreness is normal, especially if a retraction cord was used or if the treatment required extended mouth opening
• Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as recommended for relief
• Rinsing with warm saltwater can help soothe irritated gums
5. Oral Hygiene
• Brush twice daily and floss carefully around the crown or bridge to prevent decay at the margins
• Consider using a water flosser or interdental brushes for areas under bridges or around multiple units
• Use fluoride toothpaste to help strengthen surrounding enamel
6. Healing Timeline
• Mild soreness should resolve within one to two days
• Sensitivity to temperature or pressure may linger but should gradually improve
• Contact us if discomfort worsens, if the crown feels loose, or if your bite continues to feel uneven
7. Special Notes
• Same-day crowns (like CEREC) may feel slightly different at first and can occasionally cause more sensitivity
• If sensitivity persists beyond two weeks or worsens over time, let us know so we can evaluate and adjust if necessary.
