After Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning for Gum Disease)
This non-surgical treatment removes plaque and tartar buildup beneath the gumline to promote healing and stop the progression of gum disease. Following proper aftercare helps ensure a smooth recovery and long-term gum health.
1. Numbness and Soreness
• Local anesthesia may keep the area numb for a few hours after treatment
• Gums may feel tender, swollen, or sore for several days
• Teeth might feel loose or sensitive at first, but this typically improves as the gums begin to heal and tighten around the roots
2. Pain Management
• Take anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen if needed for discomfort
• Begin warm saltwater rinses the day after your treatment using one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water
• Rinse gently three to four times a day to soothe the area and reduce inflammation
3. Oral Hygiene
• Brush and floss gently the evening of your treatment
• Continue daily brushing and flossing, but avoid aggressive techniques
• If a bone graft was placed, avoid strong rinsing, spitting, or using a water flosser near the site for at least seven days
4. Diet
• Stick to soft foods for the first one to two days such as soup, eggs, pasta, or smoothies
• Avoid hard, spicy, crunchy, or acidic foods that may irritate healing gums
• Do not smoke for at least 48 hours, preferably for a full week, to support proper healing
5. Activity
• Avoid intense exercise or strenuous activity for 24 to 48 hours after treatment to reduce the risk of bleeding or swelling
6. Healing Timeline
• Gums may appear pinker and less swollen within a few days
• Full healing and improvement in gum health typically occurs over the following weeks with proper home care and maintenance
7. Special Notes
• Use any prescribed antimicrobial rinses or antibiotics exactly as directed
• Keep your follow-up cleaning appointments every three to four months to maintain gum health and prevent disease from returning
