After Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy removes infection and saves the natural tooth. Proper care after the procedure is essential to reduce discomfort and protect the tooth until final restoration.
1. Numbness and Immediate Care
• Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes after the procedure
• Wait until numbness fully wears off before chewing to prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue
• Some soreness or pressure is normal and may last one to two weeks
2. Temporary Filling or Crown
• If a temporary filling or crown was placed, avoid chewing on that side until a permanent restoration is completed
• Do not eat sticky or hard foods, which can dislodge the temporary
• If the temporary falls out or feels loose, call our office as soon as possible
3. Pain Management
• Begin taking pain medication before the numbness wears off for better comfort
• Over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen is usually sufficient
• Alternate between the two if advised for better pain control
• Avoid aspirin unless specifically instructed, as it may increase bleeding
4. Oral Hygiene
• Continue brushing and flossing normally, but be gentle around the treated area
• A warm saltwater rinse may help soothe irritated gums if needed
5. Diet Recommendations
• Stick to soft foods for the first few days such as soup, pasta, mashed potatoes, and yogurt
• Avoid chewing directly on the treated tooth and refrain from eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods
6. Healing Timeline
• It’s normal to experience mild tenderness, especially when biting down, for a few days
• Discomfort may peak within 24 to 48 hours and gradually improve over a week or two
• Full healing of surrounding tissue may take time
• It is critical to return for the permanent crown or filling to protect the tooth from fracture or reinfection
7. Special Notes
• Contact us if you experience severe pain, swelling, a fever, or signs of an allergic reaction to medication
• If antibiotics are prescribed, complete the full course as directed even if symptoms improve
• Delaying final restoration increases the risk of tooth fracture or failure, so be sure to keep your follow-up appointment
