After Dental Fillings
Dental fillings restore teeth affected by cavities and help protect your smile. Following proper care after the procedure ensures the filling lasts and prevents complications.
1. Numbness
• Numbness from local anesthesia may last one to three hours
• Avoid eating, drinking hot or cold beverages, or chewing until the numbness completely wears off to avoid accidental bites or burns
2. Sensitivity
• It is normal to experience sensitivity to temperature, sweets, or pressure for a few days to several weeks
• This is especially common with deeper fillings
• If sensitivity becomes severe, worsens over time, or does not improve, please call us for evaluation
3. Bite Adjustment
• If your bite feels uneven or the filling feels too high when biting down, contact us for a quick adjustment
• An unbalanced bite can lead to jaw discomfort or damage to the restoration
4. Pain Management
• Mild discomfort is common and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen
5. Oral Hygiene
• You may resume brushing and flossing immediately, but be gentle around the treated tooth
• Keeping the area clean supports healing and prevents further decay
6. Diet
• If you received a tooth-colored (composite) filling, avoid hard or sticky foods such as candy, nuts, or chewing gum for the first 24 hours
• If you received a silver (amalgam) filling, avoid chewing on that side for two to three hours while the material sets
7. Healing Timeline
• Most patients return to normal function within a day
• Continue to monitor the area for any prolonged pain, pressure, or changes in bite
8. Special Notes
• In cases where the cavity was deep, the nerve may remain irritated
• If pain lingers or worsens over time, a root canal treatment may eventually be needed to save the tooth
