After Denture or Partial Placement
New dentures or partials restore your smile and function, but adjusting to them takes time and patience. Proper care and follow-up are essential to long-term success and comfort.
1. Initial Wear
• If your denture was placed immediately after extractions, keep it in place for the first 24 hours, including overnight, unless instructed otherwise
• After the first day, remove and clean your dentures daily to allow the tissues to rest and to prevent infection
2. Cleaning
• Use a soft toothbrush or denture brush with mild dish soap and water
• Avoid toothpaste or abrasive cleaners, which can scratch the surface
• Soak your dentures in a denture cleaner as directed to keep them fresh and free from bacteria
3. Discomfort and Adjustment
• It is normal to develop sore spots during the first few days of wear
• If soreness persists or becomes painful, schedule an appointment so we can make precise adjustments
• Practice speaking aloud to help your tongue and muscles adapt to the new appliance
4. Diet
• Begin with soft foods and cut food into small bites
• Chew slowly and evenly on both sides of your mouth to improve balance and avoid dislodging the denture
• As you adjust, you can gradually reintroduce more foods
5. Healing Timeline
• Adapting to new dentures can take several weeks
• Regular follow-up visits allow us to monitor your healing and make necessary adjustments for comfort and function
6. Special Notes
• Unless advised otherwise, remove your dentures at night to allow the gum tissue to rest and to prevent fungal infections
• Keep your dentures in water or a cleaning solution when not in use to prevent them from drying out
